Passive House – Future Ready
Health and comfort in the home are increasingly becoming topics of conversation. Recent climatic events have bought emphasis to the need for high quality homes while drawing attention to the changing climate, its impact on weather and the logical policy responses that will follow to address the underlying cause.
Globally, building comfort and energy standards are getting a makeover. The most forward-thinking jurisdictions are setting targets that prepare us for the carbon-constrained world we are entering. This will impact on you and your home through its future value; code-compliant today will be sub-standard in the future.
Passivhaus Design & Construct believe passivhaus buildings are the best way to meet our future needs; healthy, comfortable, low energy homes based upon proven technology. We believe all buildings need to be future ready now, not in the distant future.
We believe that the use of knowledge is a powerful tool for change, so we created one; a tool that shows how future ready a home is.
We’ve taken the science-based targets from the Royal Institute of British Architects and created a tool to allow anyone to see how their home performs against these 2030 targets.
What & how?
The tool tells us if a building is future proof. When Australia’s regulatory system catches up with the remainder of the world, will the buildings we build today still be relevant?
Will they hold their value, or will they be legally required to upgrade to meet those future standards?
The tool requires data that anyone designing a new home would already have to hand. It takes data from either the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) or the NatHERS software’s; to understand the differences between them, please see the Explanation tab in the tool itself.
Why UK targets?
These are the clearest most concise ones we have seen. Their benchmarks are incredibly similar to passive house on energy and health metrics yet better presented than the British Columbian (Canada) Energy Step Code . However, we are huge fans of the BC approach using the ‘ladder of improvement’ as a way to get industry up to speed and building passivhaus-quality buildings as the new standard.
